Very warm and sunny day Sunday, so decided to go to the foundation thats produced coins from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries already. I had been there many times before without coins, but decided to give it a try with my Etrac. Got only a few things including a .38 calibur bullet, and a gear of sorts. I was there an hour or so, then I got a nice repeating signal, jumping 13-38 to 14-40. I started digging and after four shovel fulls of dirt, I see the rim of a silver coin. I knew it was a dime right away. Picked it up and wipe off the dirt and see the eagle. I flipped it over and clearly see 1814 with full Liberty. I can't capture the toning with the camera, but it has great patina and has purpleish toning. One of my best finds in a while. There is a good ding in it, I assume its from a lawnmower. In the third pic you can see parallel scratches, does anyone know what might have caused these?

Very cool, I want to dig a Capped Bust silver in the worst way! I can't imagine a coin that old being within range of a lawnmower though :dontknow:

The house that was in that location dates back to the mid-late 1700s. It burned down in the early 1900s. The area has been woods ever since. I think, if a lawnmower hit it, it would have been in the first few years after it was dropped.

I want one as well. My V3i thought it would be a good idea to skip over that variety, as well as the Draped Bust!

wow great detail on that coin! congrats

Fantastic find, congrats! :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

Now thats what gets my blood pumping. Love those capped busts.

Very cool coin!! Those parallel lines form a perfect x on the obverse, definately scratched in to the surface intentionally for some reason.Great find!!

That's an awesome dime :headbang: Those scratches are pretty odd, but a lot of the old silvers have odd scratching/engraving.. I think it was done intentionally, but why you might not ever know :dontknow: Some of them they would mark to cut into quarters but it doesn't look like that's the case here with the parallel lines. :dontknow:

awesome cap!!!!!! MR TUFF

:icon_thumright: Great Early Silver !!!!!!!!!! Congradulations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent find, love it!!...congrats!! :icon_thumleft:...I know just what you're refering to concerning the patina and purple toning as the dime in my avatar has that coloring as well, toning that only a long buried silver coin can have.

HH all!
