Catholic here and one who is very familiar with the Rosary. I can say for certain that it is not a common pattern for a Rosary but it does resemble several 18th century examples. I believe this is NOT a Rosary but a set of hand crafted prayer beads judging by the wear patterns on many of the 'charms'.

Just out of curiosity, have you contacted anyone at Le Santa Sede?

I reached out back in 2002 when I got a new manuscript from 1482, I needed to be sure of what I had and they at one pointed claimed to have this artifact on hand. They where very helpful, we went on for about 8 months and then I offered to just bring it to them. I got a massive file on the artifact, but they also told me that I should have a house in London take a look at it, they arranged that for me as well, that house kept it for a while and recommended it travel to the US for restoration.

When it was all said and done two years had passed and I was still waiting on insurance to make a choice on if they would insure it or not, until I got an answer I had asked them at the Holy Sea if they wanted to hold on to it and use it for the time being.

It was not until about 2009 when I had my new library built that I went and picked it up.

Regardless of how negative the public can be about them, they are very helpful.

Just a thought.

Originally the rosary had 150 beads, the same number of psalms in the Bible. In the twelfth century, religious orders recited together the 150 Psalms as a way to mark the hours of the day and the days of the week. Those people who didn’t know how to read wanted to share in this practice, so praying on a string of 150 beads or knots began as a parallel to praying the psalms. It was a way that the illiterate could remember the Lord and his mother throughout the day. The “Divine Office”; the official prayer of the church; is the recitation of the psalms over a four week period, and is still prayed today.

I have not kept up with all the posts but back on the first page I said that it may be a coin Rosary. By Rosary I meant a necklace worn around the neck for religious purpose no specific religion intended. Looking at the medal, the extensive wear tells me that it has been held, rubbed, etc religiously. I believe it was very important to someone at one time. Other than that I ain't got a clue.
Well I have actualy brought it to a preist a long time ago i was refered to by an antique dealer, this preist was the authority of anything to do with the church, he was a church historian, he said it defenitly had nothing to do with the church.
Church medal were mass produced etc..
While it looks like a rosary, i beleive that is coincidence,
Nothing of the pattern matches a rosary,

Also no determintion has been made yet,
I even went to my local university today and spoke with several proffesors,
The image u showed me doesnt look similar at all.... The only resource i think with a similar image would be a book someone else mention from 1500s german I have not been able to find it. Rosario della sacratassima vergine maria?

It very well may be, prayer beads, that predate the technical rosary, loiking more and more into it, it reminds me of the chaplets of the seven sorrows of mary, also the fatima rosary, even looks like a rosary the monks could use to track hours and days etc like a calendar., would this be better called a pater noster? Aparently detailed large rosries like this were big in france in 13c

Has there been a determination as to what the item actually is? I have seen examples of prayer beads and even 18th century rosaries on the internet that, while not as exquisitely crafted as this, are patterned in much the same way. View attachment 1379993

This is the only other antique 150 bead rosary on the internet????

Actually. Beads are broken up like this ,16,16,12,58,12,14,15,4coins,3crosses, 150 beads total, that is the only similarity to a rosary, and that would be to the 12th century... But also there is one tiny hidden bead, so actual 151 beads, anyone seen a 150 bead rosary??? I would like to compare the pattern, most modern rosarys have the cross / medal hanging from a single strand.

thanks for the info, from the bleeding heart going cw, how many beads b4 cross
bead or coin, and that coin date, ect. around to the other side of bleeding heart

The 4 main mysteries? Added at a later date? Still predating the standard mysteries defined in 16 c,, but still more even maybe the dates were chosen also for significance??? Such as independace,
My best geusses, Tea party, Civil war, French Revolution, Mexican war of independance. All signifcant events...

For centuries coins worn around the neck were thought to have had powers to heal, ward off spirits, and bring good luck. I still have coins with holes that have been in my family for many years. I say the amount of wear on the medal tells the story of many prayers.
so if that i wonder what is the purpose of the coins

The Blessed Virgin Mary promised to Saint Dominic and to all who follow that "Whatever you ask in the Rosary will be granted." She left for all Christians Fifteen Promises to those who recite the Holy Rosary.

1-Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces. ...2_15,
St Dominic 1221 patron saint of astronomers

The Dominican Devotion to the Rosary

The Rosary was popularized by Alan de la Roche (1428-1475), a Breton Dominican with a great reputation for sanctity. He propagated devotion to the Virgin’s Psalter in northern France and in Flanders, organizing Rosary Confraternities everywhere for all people,....

Good read and info from Www.Opsouth.org/about-us/rosary/
