What's new

A very common theme with beginners

I live in Florida and my AT pro works well in the wet salt sand.

Well I think getting the ACE or whatever to see if they even want to continue in the Hobby is a smart decision.
Why waste the money if you don't want to Detect anymore after you see it isn't as easy as the TV shows show it is LOL.
When I was a newbie I bought what I could afford and that was a cheap used garrett. But I have had many detectors since because I can't seem to stop myself from trying them all LOL.

I have had my Ace 250 now for 4 months and have no plans to move up any time soon, only thing I want for my Ace is a sniper coil.

Lookin!
I'm near Vero Beach!
Where you at buddy?
Pete

My sisters in law live in Vero! Hell, I lived in Vero with my wife for 3 months! Rita's has the best Gelatis ever by the beach. We were just there last December, that was the first place we went lol

I'm tired of hearing how the ATP is no good at the beach or wet sand...last weekend I spent two hours at the beach back and forth between dry and wet sand, I just ground balanced a few times...i found a little piece of silver size of a pea at 12 inches down in wet sand, does that sound like an inferior machine to you? It was a charm piece from a bracelet and was hard to find something that small but my ATP pounded deep down and showed me what it can do. I've had other machines, I've tried others, my club has over 100 members and easily 70% use ATPs. Club president has 18 detectors of all kinds and mainly uses an ATP. All Terrain Pro is the name not tot lot pro, back yard pro. BTW congrats on your new machine I hope you have a great time with a great machine.

No one said that it won't work at the beach. Sure, it will work at the beach, so will a Bounty Hunter to a point. I just said that for the money there are better machines for salt beach applications. The AT Pro is a fine all around versatile machine, nothing wrong with it. I just don't like disrespectful newbies who flap their gums to long time respected members of this forum that have contributed way more than they ever have. He took a reply out of context and twisted it. Comprehension goes a long way. Sandman mentioned that there are better machines out there, he didn't mention the money part, in regards to it. And you know what? He's right. There are plenty of better machines out there. He's been detecting longer than most of you have been alive probably. I think he knows what he's talking about.

I did the same thing OP.

I bought a '150 (6 months ago) to see if I'd enjoy the hobby (I DO!) and now I'm waiting for My ATP to show up :laughing7:

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to pick up a '250 as well (So many folks seem to like them) and just throw it in the trunk so
I'm always "armed" lol

calm down please

Haha small world huh?
Look me up next time you're around!
Pete

I'm not trouncing on anyone's skills or good name why I took issue with was the "all newbies think the AT pro is the best because" and the comment "provided you aren't using it in wet sand" etc. I just see so much bashing its a bit annoying. I agree that minelab puyts out a great product but you are going to shell out for it too. Whites, fisher, Tesoro all have great stuff some better than others. The tone often of certain posts is that AT pros are overrated, junk or could never compete with certain other manufacturers and that's just not the case. The machine is the best bang for the buck. If you have deeper pockets & have the time for a steeper learning curve, then check into a minelab etc but there's nothing out there being sold that will find a perfect target for you everytime in all conditions and then by shear power and technological ability pull it from the deepest darkest hole straight to your pocket

"And what FAR SURPASSES it for $600 ???" -------------- Sand Shark for one.

As for the rest of your opinions, back at ya-

Who cares? I mean... Really?
The sand Shark works well at trashy old homesites?

Not sure why anyone is so passionate about bashing ANY machine. I started with a $200 Ace 250, then bought a $600 ATP, then a $600 (*$1,200) Explorer SE and a few months ago I bought a $60 Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. Heck, I even have a childrens Radio Shack mini detector that I've used and I can't think of anything to bash any of the machines for. Even though I have a $1,200 Minelab, it doesn't get used any more than my ATP and sometimes they both take a backseat to the 250. They all do their job and do it well. I think a lot of the people who get hung up on one brand name and bash others are also hung up on brand names of clothing, cars etc. and look down on others for how they dress, what they drive... It doesn't matter what brand you wear, it's how you wear it.

(okay that ended abruptly but I got distracted and lost my train of thought..)

Im totally with u on this 1 100%

Yes but there 2 totaly different machines ones meant for beaches the other is a go any where so it has abilities to go anywhere so ya it may not b perfect in every área but u can still use it I dont c many people taking a sand shark.out for relic hunting out in the Woods or out to the farm feilds so it kinda doesnt surpass the Atpro pro still has more abilities to go more places. Now if I were only hunting water/ sand then ya sand shark all the way but these newer guys like the pro cuz it works & works well in all environments not just 1

Since newbie, Knightsquad was talking about his own experiences in wet salt sand with the AT Pro, that is what my response was aimed at.
Of course the AT Pro would be a better dry land detector when it comes to discriminating and target id. That being said, if you have an area in which you are digging all signals, then the Sandshark will still work just fine and go deeper than the AT Pro.

The sand Shark works well at trashy old homesites?
Of course not, I've quoted my original responses to help you out some since it's obvious you need it. I really wish you would read EVERYTHING before you jump the gun and take something out of context.

PS- Certain responses by Knightsquad (the first one about him detecting the beach just fine with the AT Pro as well as others from him) have been deleted because they were of an offending and personal nature.

Let me spell it out-

THE AT PRO IS A FINE MACHINE, NOTHING WRONG WITH IT.
READ THAT AGAIN-
THE AT PRO IS A FINE MACHINE.

Yes, it will work at the beach, (so will a Bounty Hunter if you know how to use it). BUT the Sandshark is a better machine (for the money) for saltwater beach use. That was my only point when I replied to this thread, besides getting a little defensive over a smart alec reply to Sandman by Knightsquad.

I'm over this one.

To the OP. I apologize for taking this thread off on a different tangent. Good luck and HH

The OPs observation about a user's tendency to upgrade exists in the world of Motorcyles too :). A lot of riders start with a lower end model (I started with a Sportster), and then in a very short time they realize they want more power so they buy a model with more power or bells & whistles. (I now have a FatBob). As most of you have guessed, discussing different makes of detectors is kind of like religion or politics, and almost always end in argumentative posts.

If you're like me you will always have your fantasy detector (Mine is a CTX-3030). Until I can find the money for that, I am very happy with my current gear. Arguing about which detector is best is pretty much a waste of time...better spent on sharing tips, details about great finds, or that next great new product.

I'm still enjoying my ACE 250 but only had it for a bit over 3 years with about 3000 hours on it. The ACE has paid for 1. a sniper coil 2. Garrett propointer 3. headphones 4. a Tesoro Vaquero (cashed in 1200 quarters plus some other change I found with the ACE) 5. The VAC got me another Garrett Propointer. The hobby really pays for itself but I'm retired and out 5 days a week at least 4 hrs each time. The most common theme I see is newbies purchasing a starter detector (such as myself) and moving on to a more expensive on WITHOUT learning what they're "starter" machine can really do. I'm still using the ACE 70% of the time and the VAC for 30% when I'm at old homes, ranches, farms or anyplace I'm going to dig deep and I use it mostly without discrimination and it's usually super tuned...I'm digging it ALL. I've always felt that you'll know when it's time to move on...it's when your starter machine has found enough coins to pay for your next machine. Just my opinion. Thanks for reading.

If you are the average everyday hunter and do not want to saltwater detect then the ATP is all you will ever need in a mid priced detector. They are extremely hot on jewelry and coins, and have enough depth for most situations...6"-10". You can freshwater hunt with it or if you do not water hunt, being able to hunt in the rain is a bonus. I have had 6 ATP's at one time, just sold another one Friday so down to only 2 now. Bang for the buck for all the features and an ALL-IN-ONE detector the ATP is nearly impossible to beat in its price range of $550-$600. Now for the more advanced or seasoned detectorist, we tend to like to have multiple machines that are more specific for the hunting conditions. As far as starting out with say an ACE 250 first...well that is up to the buyer to decide what they can afford and if they are just trying out the hobby or plan on really sticking with it. If you are planning on sticking with it...then get the ATP! Skip the Ace 250 first, why...because the ATP in Standard MODE is running just like an ACE 250..except with a "DD" coil...it is SUPER simple to learn! Call Garrett and they will confirm this. Then when comfortable switch to PRO MODE and its a whole different detector.
