What's new

A very common theme with beginners

Just my quick 2c. I had little problem gb'ing the ATP in Myrtle Beach, but had issues keeping it stable in sea isle city, nj. I believe the beach replenishment after Sandy really brought inconsistency to the dry and wet sand. It seemed i had to re-gb every 20'-30'. Still really like the MD though. It has served me well.

I have noticed over and over that when a guy gets into metal detecting they start with an Ace series detector and within a month they order an AT Pro. I did the same thing. I started with an ACE 250 and within 90 days I bought an AT Pro. It would seem a guy should just jump to the ATP in the beginning but I think everyone should start with an Ace series detector to learn. It's also nice to have a spare detector in case someone wants to go out with you.

We all tell the guys to move up to the ATP but I think you should be hooked on detecting before you spend the bucks on the ATP. For the money i don't think there is a better detector out there.

I just purchased my first metal detector May 24th 2013, it is a Garrett AT Pro. I did TONS of research on ALL of the metal detectors I could research, and came away with the AT Pro, figured I could learn it well enough given enough time, I've always wanted to metal detect all my life, but only started after recently retiring. I'm glad I got the AT Pro, I'm learning on a somewhat better machine than I would be had I started with an ACE series, and when I decide to get a better/deeper detector, and I will, I will have a darn good "Spare/Extra" detector.

I felt pretty certain that I was going to love the hobby, and I do, I've been out digging almost every day since and learning the language of my machine, and after reading many people saying that you have to learn the language I have come to know that is true, it really is like learning a new language, and I love it. It's more interesting each day. Just wish I'd find a Merc or a bit of silver but I'm still early in the game.

I'm not saying everyone should get an AT Pro or similar above entry level detector for their first, but for myself, having a very good idea I'd love the hobby as I've always wanted to do it, I felt safe in spending the money and figured if I didn't like it, I could sell it. Of course the fact that it is waterproof and I am in Oregon had much to do with my decision as well. I think I'd wind up being bored with a simpler machine at this point. HH

This post is still going on!!!!
Hahaha
This is the post that got me banned
A week ago! Lol

I ain't sayin anything!
BUT dont step on my PRO ! Hahaha

What up Chisto! RKS!
Miss you guys! ; )

Awesome that you're finding targets easy, hope you target some jewelry. It took me a couple tries but with the help of a veteran beach digger who uses a machine like ours I was able to fine tune the ATP quickly. Figured out my own technique which is to GB for dry sand and hunt a large area then GB for the wet sand aide of that same area. Works for me. Best of luck to you.

Very good decision on the ATP!
You probably would have been bored
with a simpler machine, you're right'
As much as you have been out hittin it'
the silver and gold will come quick!
Keep at it! Nice post!

I run a CTX 3030, an etrac and an AT Pro, and at the end of the day THERE ISNT ANOTHER machine out there that can touch the AT PRO for the money!! Although I know a fella named dustytrails who dis agrees, I love that guys rants.... But seriously for the money AT Pro IS THE WAY to go!! IMHO of course.. Love my CTX though

I agree with u as well I think we r kinda in the same boat with keeping the Atpro in the arsenals I'm running a deus xp ,whites v3i aswell as my Atpro & there r things that the pro does that our higher end machines don't its about right tool for the job - or the site
