What's new

A very common theme with beginners

While its great to debate things here on the wonderful world wide web. Unfortunately, there are some who just can not get past their own feelings. They feel what they have is the best, and everyone else should follow their lead. But what they don't know is that some just simply cant afford these type of metal detectors, or just wish not to buy the most expensive kind there is. Either way, most times people just need to keep there feelings to themselves and move on.

Just as Chevy vs. Ford, Harley vs. jap bikes, Reps vs. Dems, the debate will continue to go on! (BTW, I own a Honda Magna 700cc. ;) )

I'm heading to Myrtle Beach next week to try the salt water with my AT Pro for the first time. What settings do you guys use that have the best luck with it in salt water?
Thanks!

Well the times Ive been out in the sslt beaches they have been up in Cape cod with the pro i usuallu run my sensitivity around 3-5 bars manually ground balance to 67 or where ever it becomes stable Ive heard of people doin a auto gr then manually take it down -10-15 from where it balanced out. Best of luck to u

Thanks Christo!

Anytime & again best of luck buddy

In the wet sand and saltwater, mine ground balances at around 13 using auto ground balance. I run standard mode because pro mode is too chatty. I run in zero mode with sens between 4 and 6. I start on 6 and lower it if it falses...I never have to go lower than 4. If you move to the dry sand you will have to ground balance again, somewhere between 60 and 80...wet sand and in water the gb will be the same, around 13...good luck.

Thanks lookindown! I had people tell me that you have to just about have a target touch the coil in salt water to pick it up with the AT Pro. What kind of depth have you guys experienced on the salt?

No not true & that was probly what from the guys with full blown water machines, I cant say there wrong & I cant say they r right when in the water if I got a hit I couldnt see the bottom of the coil just used my scoop scooped up that área & pulled the ítem so anywhere from top to a good scoops worth my scoop.is like 6" anywhere in there I guess sorry not as much info as u were probly looking for. But there are quite a few haters out there on Atpro being used in salt water yes it may not b the best, cuz its not a water machine its an all around machine that can go from water to land in the blink of an eye. Hope u get the right info ur looki.g for

The minerals may be different in your area...here in Florida I can get a quarter at 8 inches...can tops and such, much deeper...not as deep as the true saltwater machines but the target definitely doesn't have to scrape the coil...that's with sens on 5 of 8 bars, which is usually where mine runs stable.

I have been out of the loop for a while more important issues to deal with then being here. a few points to talk about. 1 I never do like people who look down their noses at peoples Machine. swing what you can afford. Would I love to have a excaliber? Heck yes! can I afford it? heck no! Or drop almost 5 grand on a minelab GPX 4800 Never in my life time. To me what ever rig you got good on you. For me I use my AT Pro in salt water on the wet sands of the Pacific North west. and I do just fine! and when some one pipes up about there are better. I say more power to you! thanks for your time to point that out!

I don't see where that has happened on this thread. :dontknow:???

I agree with everything else you said. Christ, I started out with a Bounty Hunter.

Just to make my point. this guy always chimes in on how there is better etc.. "All newbies think the AT Pro is the best because they haven't had the opportunity to use other detectors that far surpass the AT Pro in performance. But it is a fair MD for the price provided you aren't trying to use it at a saltwater beach in the wet sand."
to me he may mean well and good but in my own opinion he comes off rather borish.

I have had my ace 250 for a little over a month, and well...
I just ordered an ATP International from middlesexdetectorsales in Ontario.
Lol.
I like my ace, but here is what I fou d with it. Not great for Canadian coinage, I would be digging every ketchup packet and cigarette foil I run across. The target Id just can't be counted on for our money. I would come home after a few hours with about 9 pennies and sometimes some American dimes/nickels. I've been out for hours and hours with the ace and only found 2 Canadian nickels and 1 loon.
Im sure the high mineral soil here, and salt water beaches aren't helping the ace either, I hope the at pro ground balancing can help that.

I sure hope so, I'm some excited for it to get here.

Wish me luck tho, gotta tell the wife what's coming soon...before it arrives and she starts wondering how much I spent. Haha

This will be my quit smoking present that I never got last year!

HH! Keep your coil on the ice lol

Well there u go 2,for 1 Congrates. On the not smoking present & the new machine I always wonder what to say to my wife when I buy a new machine & gear

Yeah, then there are some that have a fair bit of experience with detectors that supposedly "far surpass the AT Pro in performance" that still prefer the ATP because of how well it works in 99% of situations.
If the AT Pro had been made by ANY other manufacturer, fans of that manufacturer would be calling it the best detector in their lineup. It's a fact not an opinion!

As for the OP - it kinda depends on the person. When I got back into detecting after many many years away, I started with what I consider an entry level $300 unit. It took me about a day to realize I just threw money away. Wish I had just ponied up for the higher end detector right away!

I have the AT PRO and like the light weight, but since I mainly detect in the water I am concerned about leaks from the face plate. I don't need a screen in the water as I feel you'll lose some ladies white gold rings as these ring up in foil and below. So you need to hunt in Zero mode. However I much prefer my Tejon for land as it is deeper.

Rob you shouldn't have any issues if you auto GB when you move from the dry to wet sand. Wet sand on mine goes down to the teens and in the 60's on dry. As far as depth I've found an item size of a pea at a foot deep on wet sand so its hoopla that ATPs need to touch an item. Run the thing in pro mode, I run mine full sensitivity but I will switch frequencies till I knock out the chatter. I hope it helps and wish you best of luck I hear MB is prime jewelry zone and would love to hit that area some time.

Thanks bzbadger! I'm at Myrtle Beach now and the ATP is working great! No problems on the GB at all on dry or water at full sensitivity. I have dug coins at 8-10 inches. No jewelry so far but I'm trying! The thing has definitely impressed me way more than I was expecting after swinging a V3i for so long. So easy to learn in pro zero mode, I have not even tried the standard mode. It really gives a lot of bang for the buck. I am impressed to say the least.
