The handle is over 6 feet long the claws or tongs are probably 10 to 12 inches long each having 2 teeth.

I had rather forlornly hoped that you hadn't seen or id'd the tongs on the wall sigh.

Not excuses, but statements of fact.

I made three mistakes.

!) I have seen pictures of the Chinese using "exactly the same device" for handling rails, but I cannot find it so---inadmissible. However, naturally, it flavored my thinking. sniff

I must admit that the tongs in the picture of his colllection ( I now hate him) are far more reliable and safer.



2) The picture on my screen was not too clear, I did not try to rectify this until the latter stages or I would have seen the divided/split points of the tongs. This is why I mentiomed the "pressure ridge" on the inside of the hooks of the tongs.

3) The shaft was a critical factor, fixed it became a different usage tool. Is it possible that one has been modified?
How does one handle a 6' shaft alone? sigh

Conclusions, I now have a workable effigy of you Gollumie, please send me some hair or fingernail parings so that I can start with the pins.

Let's say this may have been used to:
come-a-long/tighten chains on a railroad car carrying logs.
I found an example of a photo showing how these were transported.
Note the bottom left of the photo showing the chains sinched with the tie down device.

Been there. There are many ways of stretching fencing, both wire and panel (we raise cattle and hogs on our little piece of heaven, been there too)

All I am saying is that the device in question will perform in exactly the same way as the one dislpayed in Chagy's jpg. Use it as a miserably slow come along to pull your truck out of the mud or to strech a fence it's the same tool, only older.

Have you ever had a San Miguel IN the PI? The ones that are not for export have formaldehyde (embalming fluid) in them. Helluva kick, but take a lot of getting used to. The ones for export are like normal beer.

I prefer Pacifico w/lime or XX.
