Finally 1800's update!!! AND THEM SOME!!! AND EVEN MORE!!!!!

Finally!!! I was out in the church yard today sweating in the heat.. Swinging along the sidewalk I was content finding a few wheaties with my new M-6,(thanks Dallas!)... Well by now the sweat running in my eyes I figured at the end of the shade a small tree was providing me I would call it a day.. The M-6 gave me a high tone in the penny dime range and in the 90's vdi..I was in a bit of a rush so when I pinpointed it the depth reading was 9".. I had a quick thought to forget about it and head in... I had a short walk to get to the house and figured I would do a quick dig.. Cut a flap about 6" deep and checked it..Still in the hole.. I grabbed my pinpointer and started probing the bottom.. No signal.. I scan the hole again and a clear repeatable high tone was heard.. I took my trowel and slid it down the sides of the hole 3-4" and loosened the soil.. The first time I stuck the pinpointer in the bottom of the hole it sounded off.. So carefully I brushed the dirt away and see a glint of silver.. I thought it might be silver as I found a 1923 merc a few days ago but it was only at 5 ".. Pulled it out and with out brushing the dirt off I went to put it in a film container which wasn't in my pouch.. So I put in my shirt pocket and thought to myself, "I better keep a eye on that".. Dug a signal and watched it fall out!! Picked it up and back in the same pocket again!! And did that one more time!!! Got back to the house and threw the pennies and it in a glass of water.. After I cooled down I started rinse them off and looking to see if they were wheaties or not.. Well I get to the dime I didn't even wipe it off I just ran it under the faucet.. I don't have my glasses so i call my daughter and ask if I can borrow her eyes.. I say "can you read this" and figured its a rosie but hopefully a merc.. She look and says it says one dime on it.. I then ask what year and she replies 1899!! I'm shocked and say"ARE YOU SURE??? So here it is...

After my last post I was cleaning the wheats that the M-6 found yesterday.. When I get home I rinse them and try to determine if I should clean them.. I look at the back of the pennies and I can see the raised area that the wheat makes and clean those and put the memorials in a bucket for later tumbling.... Well after about 3 hours I check to see how the wheats were doing,, First was a 31 and it was cleaned quite nice.. The other three still needed more so back in they went.. 2 hours go by and I checked to see if any further cleaning was nesassary.. Rinsing them off I found a 55 and the next was a 41.. Great!!
As I proceeded to rinse the last one off I noted it needed a little more time.. I didn't have my glasses or magnifying glass but as I rinsed it I notice it is different.. I left it for a time while I located my glasses amd magnifying glass.. I couldn't beleive my eyes a indiainhead!! As I scan the coin and look for a date I remember that I made a comment to my son when I found a 1909 wheat that I wished it was a 1909 indian instead.. Well not only did the M-6 find me my first 1800's coin, a 1899 dime but as my eyes focused the date was 1889!!!! Not one but two 1800's coins on the Fourth of July!!!!!

Well I was hunting today in the same area and the M-6 gave me a high tone.... and found thisanother first for me a 1930 standing lady quarter !!!! ;D

Get some of those multi-pocket shorts! ---

Hello Cosmic!
Great story; Great finds!

My wife picked me up some $5.00 shorts at Sam's and I really like them. I guess they are referred to as "CARGO?" because of all the flapped and zippered pockets. I really like them as when I do have a special find or two I always have a safe place to store them. No more lost finds for me, at least the valuably interesting ones.

Oh, by the way; I love OLD on coils! :)

Great coins and thanks for telling the tale of the find.

Re: Finally 1800's update!!! AND THEM SOME!!!

Cosmic,
Great job! Love the coins. I still haven't found any 1800's silver, only IH's (3). I almost gave up on digging an 8" deep hole a few weeks ago too. Finally my probe detected something down there. Turned out to be a 1900 IH. ;D
Congrats to you & welcome to the "1800's Club".

It's funny how most people ( general public) don't even know what a Barber coin is. And you just popped one out of the ground!

Congratulations!

Re: Finally 1800's update!!! AND THEM SOME!!!

I've got to laugh at you old man. cosmic's my dad and well he left out one cool point. He sent the photos and a story to white's. There putting it up on the website and they may put it in print. It also netted him a 200.00 gift certificate. So yeah he had a great day with a great detector. Now we just need to get out there and see what else we can pop out of the ground with this machine. So far I'd say I am very impressed.

Re: Finally 1800's update!!! AND THEM SOME!!! AND EVEN MORE!!!!!

Hello cosmic. I also purchased a M6 about three weeks ago. To say that I am satisfied would be an understatement. Have found more good targets in the last three weeks than I have with my PrizmIV in the last year. Have found 6 silver dimes( four merks) and two silver rings one silver pin. I love the over max setting to make the faint tone clearer. Will try to post pictures tomorrow of finds. A great machine, easy, fun, and it goes deep. The merks were all in the 8 in range. Sounds like your getting a good handle on your machine Keep up the good work and be careful in this heat :) CB

Re: Finally 1800's update!!! AND THEM SOME!!! AND EVEN MORE!!!!!

Hello blue shad

I hunt in the 8? tone mode. It is noisy in this mode over trash but I ignore all the tones except the high tones and the tone that is made in the vdi 18-20 range if it locks onto this range 90% of the time it is a nickel. Using this method I have been picking up a lot of nickels and only a few pieces of rolled up can slaw In this mode i use the preset dis and sensitivity. If I get a weak high tone then I put the sen. on max and go over only the target. As far as penny dime readings I also have to dig before I know if it is a dime or a copper penny but I like real pennies. I also am still learning but I am really enjoying the greater depth and the VDI of the M6. I hope this helps in any way. CB
