i havent hear much good on hi point, but another cheeply priced one is the 9mm kel-tek, thinking of one my self, local guy selling them for 198. the only thing i dont like is the 3.25 barrel, want atleast a 4". just to have incase of a bear, or couger

A 22 is all that is needed for a cougar if you know where to shoot it, 22 mag is better. Now a bear is a different story go up at least a 357 mag. But if you do not want to carry a gun u can,t beat a good dog for both, they are much more effective.

Wow, I didn't know that. Glock is a good gun, but everyone of them that I had in my hands, the grip didn't feel right, too boxy and square feel to it. I don't know how some people handle them.

Thanks for the info Edde, we gun advocates learn something new everyday. I take it that it only scared the crap out of you when it happened and didn't get hurt?

hey gang,
I gotta tell ya when I was a kid a 44 magnum was largest handgun around ( remember dirty harry ). Then about 3 months ago I'm a gun shop and saw this thing that could split a boulder !!!! this thing was HUGE!!!! I don't know the maker or caliber but it made the 44 look like a pellet gun.. Anyone know what it was ??

hey gang,
First thing I would like to say is that I'm not necessarily a gun advocate... But I have heard that many of the Thr's do carry guns when out in the field. So I have been thinking about getting one ( just for varmint's- snakes, etc ) just in case. I'm not out to cause bodily harm to anyone, just to protect myself against nature if needed. So I am looking for the " cheapest " and best option.... Any suggestions ?? I don't think I need a big caliber.. maybe a 22 is all I need ??

or the same in smaller .22 LR much easier and more comfortable to conceal. This gun is so compact that it will fit into your hand as you walk, and can not be seen.....ergo no brandishing offense.

+1 on the Taurus Judge. IMO, the best thing to carry for varmits and up close and personal encounters. The .410 shot shells will take care of any snake that you might encounter.

After much discussion about this topic between hubby and I, he finally agreed to let me fill out the application for a permit to carry a gun. When that is done and I am approved through the county, he will take me out shooting with several different hand guns to see which one I am more comfortable with. It has been years since I shot a gun.

I am going to wait until spring to fill out the application since it is to cold to do any shooting now.

Now that I know that you're a woman and not too experienced (not that there's anything wrong with that ), I wouldn't recommend the Taurus Judge. It's too big. If you were one of my daughters, I'd recommend a smaller revolver. I'd also recommend one that you buy some shot shells (buckshot) to load into it. They'd work much better on snakes and up close varmits (4 legged and 2 legged). I used to take a 22 pistol fishing with me back in the 60's. I remember seeing a snake coming towards me and emptied the pistol trying to get the snake. All I did was splatter up the mud next to it. It's very difficult to kill a snake with a bullet, contrary to what you see on TV.

unlike in the photos posted in the link...rattlesnakes in arizona are the same color as their surroundings...
sheesh...then you shoot at the snake, hit a rock...shoot yourself or others...i actually watched some one do that...

i clomp around in big boots...snakes feel the vibrations of your passage...avoid you as much as i avoid them.
