I believe I found a civil war belt buckle today...

Don’t know much about civil war relics but this buckle sure looks like many i have seen on this forum, it was about ten inches down at first I thought it was a big piece of copper until I seen the eagle on the front and about five feet away a huge religious medal witch was around 9 inches down...

I hate to be a fly in the ointment, but it looks to be Indian Wars or later. I base that on the width of the tongue and that it appears to be stamped brass instead of being cast. It’s still a great find though!

I agree. Post war style tongue on that one. Still a great find.

Excellent find. You must have been thrilled. If you look at my Avatar, that is the only one I have ever found. I did soak it in olive oil, and I think it helped bring out the patina. Mine was a stamped Brass belt plate.

you did a nice job on it looks awesome I also soaked mine in olive oil it helps loosen the crude and litely using tooth picks I must say it looks so much better.
