I don't know.You might have to ask dead people why they would do such a thing. Care for a seance? BTW, it's just as plausible as digging a hole about 90 feet straight down.

Vikings were known to bury vessels with dead leaders as memorials, one example being the Gokstad!

Now that I'm thinking about it even the Egyptians buried ships.
 

They believed the soul needed a ship to travel around in the After-life; other cultures did, too.
