OK SO UP UNTIL ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO I HAD ALMOST NO INTEREST IN treasure hunting even though I've loved history since i was a kid. i was walking home from work, and i like to cut Through the woods so i can smoke, and because it's quicker. Here's where i lost my favorite ring cost me about 2g's, it was dark so i had no chance of finding it so i just memorized where it fell of and came back the next day. so i was looking the next day but couldn't find it, i decided it must have fallen in this small hole that was around where i was searching, so i go home and get a shovel and dig up the hole it goes on for a bout a foot then there is my ring sitting on top of a metal box. at first i was a bit scared cause theres a lot of power lines around my area, but it looked too old so i take it out with my ring an here is what was inside.
anyone have any idea what this stuff is? will post the rest of the pictures later

ALSO; now I'm kinda hyped to find stuff any legends/treasures/ stories about NYC or the Bronx/Yonkers/westchester??? and what a good Detector for a beginner

It's maybe a souvenir box from a murderer. They are said to like to take things from their victims' houses so they can relive the horrid events for the thrill they get from it. The strangely diverse variety and age of the items makes me think they are like trinkets/souvenirs from a criminal's dastardly deeds.
Oh man, if that's the case, I hope he didn't encounter the owner of the box on his way back to snap a few shots.

;D ;D ;D I was TRYING to come up with a somewhat reasonable explanation for the strange assortment of stuff. And do so without sounding like I was doubting the veracity of the story. That was the best I could do with the amount of info available. LOL

Dang!!!

Who needs a metal detector when you've got a "BigBen".

You can go huntin with me any day, if you can make it to the Chicago area.
Remember nothing happens by chance?

Way to go, it looks like some kid buried a time capsule of some sort.
Sure was some nice finds and all without a metal detector.
WOW!!!

my guess it was put there in the 60's.

May have been the site of some Kids "HUT"
and they Buried it. probably each Item was brought
by each one.

Are you sure the Box was too Heavy ?
maby it was just wedged in so tight it feels heavy.
I'v had that happen with tin cans.

Jeff.....I don't think a single one in here is jealous...just abit leary of his "tale"...If you look at what he said..He took the box out of the hole along with his ring...then it got too heavy. Heck..i'm glad as heck when someone finds something interesting...I even like the pics of the pull tabs..lol I hope he wasn't pulling our chain buttttttttt

This can happen when you smoke too much in the dark woods. 8) ;) ;)
Interesting assortment, however no real treasure or history here except for the Morgan. I went back and reread and realized that you emptied the box. So there is no need to go back unless the box will yield a clue as to how this assortment came to being there. Interesting find and welcome to the forum. Please post back.

SORRY But,

I realy Don't care how it appears.

This is TreasureNet. not

"Accusations are us"

We do NOT Accuse anyone of Lying on TreasureNet
without absolute Proof.

and even then, I DON'T WANT TO SEE IT IN PRINT
ON LINE. only in a PM or EMail. so We can decide what
should be done.

NO EXCEPTIONS ;)

could be stuff under the cache box -old trick--small stuff in box --bigger under

some times bigger and better stashes are under the "gimme box" lets say a person finds your cache & finds a few "worthless" type items ---they say to themselves that was a waste of time & effort and maybe at worst they remove the box with the junk in it---meanwhile the big loot buried 3-4 feet deeper goes untouched. its an old pirate / robber trick to throw off others seeking their loot.--they often put an empty chest / or a chest with a bit of junk in it over one with serious loot so anyone finding the "spot" would first strike the empty/ junk one thus breaking their will to look any farther and say it's been found and looted already or it was just a made up hoax treasure "story" . sneaky ole buzzards eh?

Does anyone know what that item is in the 8th picture? The thing that kind of looks like a Medusa (Gorgon), the lady with snakes coming out of her head. Any ideas?
Thanks,
MM

I think it's either a Locket or Compact.

Thanks Jeff. I'm still new to the coin world, and after seeing some of the strange old coins posted on the forums, I thought maybe that was one I had never seen before. ;D

I grew up in the Van Cortland section of the bronx and I can tell you there
is a lot of history in that area. Other then Van Cortland Park itself, like the golf
course and around the lake I can't figure out where else you would be walking thru the woods. Further up in Riverdale I guess there is more wooded areas. The cache you found
is very neat and a bit confusing. The toy gun and pepsi thing puzzle me. If the cache is
from the 50's I don't think anyone would have thought these items important enough to bury. If the Cache represents someones memory box its an odd assortment and it lacks
typical momentos such as letters, clippings , photographs that you would usually
associate with a memory box. A box that someone buried recently to hold items
he/she thought might have some value dosen't make sense either as the locket or pill box with the ladies head is in terrible condition. This cache is a puzzle but irregarless it is
a great find.

Actually
It appears to be a little too Thick to me to be a Locket.

My personal opinion, it is a Compact.

As Gypsy pointed out, it has a Hinge,
so it's definately not solid.

Glad to help.
Jeff

Bigben, I hope you will come back and show us a picture of the box and
tell us more about this Cache.

I like Sonny will apologize to anyone I might have offended with my remarks. I have never out and out called anyone a liar unless I knew them personally and knew them to be a liar. I guess my inferences was in that direction and I am sorry for that. This is a great forum and I have learned a lot about detecting. I will just have to learn to keep my mouth shut and do more reading..lol
