OLD LEATHER COIN PURSE WITH 5 LARGE SILV.and 5 SMALL SILV. pos. best find in 43 years

[history hunter]

I went to a fresh house tear down this morning and it was going kind of slow until my last reading. It was kind of a iffy signal back and forth between 28.00 and 29.00. I dug down about 10" or so and the first thing I saw in the dirt outside the hole, was a quarter size silver disc, that upon closer examination turned out to be a barber! I said yes but then started to see and pick silver dimes out of the dirt, then more silver quarters,"barbers and a standing liberty! Pushing the dirt around, I saw a half size disk and picked it up and saw it was two halves (barber), stuck together! Then found a barber dime and two buffalos in the dirt. I checked the hole really thoroughly after that and also found pieces of leather with coin impressions in them. I figured it was lost about 1928, since the 1928 merc is like new and that was the newest coin in the purse. The old truck was found about 10 feet away at 15" and says "goodee and brunswick NJ. inside it. Finally found an old coin purse with old silver!!!
The contents of the coin purse were as follows:

Barber halves 2 ea. 1898 and 1905 S
Barber quarters 2 ea. 1895 and 1900
Standing liberty 1 ea. ? S
Barber dime 1 ea. 1916 S
merc dimes 4ea. 1917, 1918, 1926 and 1928 D
buffalo nickels 2 ea. 192? and ?

Terrific finds!

Two days ago I found a token with a similar reverse (assuming the No Cash Value side is the reverse) but with a rampant eagle/shield on the obverse. Can anyone tell me anything about it (them), like origin or age? Sadly, a purse full of coins didn't accompany mine.

Chuck

That no cash value coin is an arcade token, they really do have no cash value.

Thank you for the information. An arcade token makes sense. There must have been a lot of varieties. I really didn't think they had any intrinsic cash value but it's nice to know what I found. It was my third token of the year.

It might have been. I found it at the end of where the drive way use to be. I also went back to the property and one of the construction workers approached me. He told me that one of the houses they tore down, had an old man living in it and that he had a horde of gold coins and other coins that no one ever knew what happened to after he died,( same house where I found the coin purse). He said some one in the area went in to the abandon house and found a trap door in the house's floor, they opened it and found a gold coin lying in the dirt. The worker said that they looked for the gold but found nothing. He said the next day they were going to fill that area in to level off the property, so I gave it a shot with the SE PRO, but found nothing.
