So still in shock here guys, was out detecting an old road looking for a colonial spot we though was close and got a solid 24 on my Equinox 800. Dug down about 5" and saw this laying in the hole. Can't remember much after that but my buddy said I was jumping up and down and yelling "Holy S---" over and over - when I finally calmed down I just said "gold" and opened my hand to show him .... his mouth just dropped

It is HUGE and she is a beaut!!

Thanks - yes i've always had good luck on old roads, seems to make sense - we went back and searched high and low on this road though and only found a dandy button - weird?, we are heading into the woods around the road after hunting season is over

Congrats on your find of a lifetime. I dug one gold coin in my 33 years of metal detecting. It was a 1905 $2.50 liberty. They sure are tough to come by.

Are these just all roads that are still all roads or do you look up where old Road used to be and if you do how do you do it?

We stumbled on this old road in the forest. It was not on any of our maps, might have been a logging trail not sure - in general though yes we look for old roads (maps, old aerial photos, google earth etc) and walk them listening for iron that will point to an old homestead.

hope this helps!

Your diligence paid off big time. Congrats. I now know how it feels, but mine was a micro $1 gold. To have that big a coin go undetected is amazing. Good job.

I was really surprised someone lost a gold coin this big and in a VERY remote location?? I clearly remember the gold shining out through the dark dirt, i'm sure it was the same for you, congrats on your find, small / big doesn't matter - we're in the club right?
