Surprisingly enough last summer I saw some okra growing in our nearby community garden so I guess it's doable.
Also an ethnic market we go to carries it I usually just chop it up and saute it in oil and seasonings.

Hopefully one of the member looking at the what is it forum can decipher it. I do you a former coworker with lots of Japanese contacts but that would be a convoluted way to get it sorted out.
