YEEEEHAAAW I'm in the Club Now!

Hello All,

As you know, I have been visiting fellow IRON Brigade member Hill Billy for a little digger's reunion this week. We knocked it out of the ballpark yesterday with HB digging an 1821 8 Reales and me digging a pre-Civil War solid silver spoon with engraved initial and maker's mark. Today was no different on day two, IRON Brigade style. ;D

We spent all morning trying to track down a pesky house site deep in the woods with no success. HB had gotten some stinging nettles in his hand yesterday and he was whimpering like a little boston terrier all day about the pain. We crossed creeks, tore through briar thickets, and hunted ridge tops looking for that danged site, and it never happened. No iron patch. Nada.

So we hiked back up a field toward the Yota and heard a tractor coming from the neighboring farm. Being the sociable diggers we are, we stopped to talk to the farmer. We explained who we were and who we had got permission from, and started asking about some old house sites and wells on some property. He said "I've got an old spot up there in my cut tobacco patch. Y'all are welcome to try your geiger counters up there." 8) We hopped in the Yota and follered him down the road.

We got up there in that bakkie patch and he said "Y'all boys go at it. Knock yourselves out." Well it didn't take any time at all for us to start swinging like a bunch of frothed up old hunting dogs. There was OLD glass, brick, and pottery everywhere.

I started diggin some flat buttons and HB was finding zilch, still complaining about the thistle stuck in his finger and whimpering like a little girl about his XLT not working properly. Yesterday was my learning curve on the XLT, so I was stoked, diggin buttons left and right. I dug a nice two-piece button, and put it in my pouch, then got another mid-range signal. When I dug it, it sealed ole Hill Billy's fate for the hunt. Nail in the coffin. :D I shouted a big YEEEHAAAAW, Kentucky Style, as I saw what I saw layin in that ancient dirt:

Look hard or you might miss that tiny lil ole silver hidin in there. Lemme give ya another chance:

I said "I'll be danged" and got it in my hand, thinking it was a half reale--and ready to joke with HB about him diggin the Big Boy yesterday and me replying with the Tiny Baby. Then I saw the date and realized it was Made in the USA.

1829 I yelled "That's a Capped Bust!" After 20 years of diggin, I was in the Capped Bust Club! HB headed up the hill far enough that he couldn't hear my machine beeping away with good targets. :laughing7:

I dug some more buttons, and eyeballed a find I'm pretty thrilled with: a bone-handle from a two-tine fork. I had never found one of these, and was mighty pleased to find one in the bakker patch.

Eventually HB dug an old thimble that he could put on that hurtin finger. He mighta got one or two flat buttons that got away from me. :laughing7: Here's my finds for the day, before cleaning:

The two-piece button I dug turned out to be an Eagle I Button! :headbang: I have a hunch it is pre-war, and I don't have my reference books with me, but the back mark is SUPERIOR and WHH&C??? I can't read anything after the letter "C" and could use some help on an ID for the button. It almost looks like an Eagle "T" rather than an "I"!

Re: YEEEEHAAAW I'm in the Club Now!

Found it. The button is listed as a GI200E2 in Tice. I am not as familiar with the pre-war buttons and backmarks. Thanks to all who gave helpful information, and thank you all for the kind replies. Now it's time to dig up the South again. :icon_pirat:

Cheers,

Buckles
