✅ SOLVED A "why" Pottery Shard....?

[curious kat]

....am wondering why they made them like this....seems it would hurt carrying? Guess they were easier to "not" drop...but "ouch"....

[curious kat]

....wouldn't upload the 3d picture....trying again here....

[monsterrack]

Hey Kat that is real cool they could have been copying a cactus, just a thought. Very nice find and rare looking

[Tnmountains]

Maybe a brush for someone with thinning hair? I have no idea Kat.

[GatorBoy]

Looks like a fossil

[VERDE]

Hey curious kat!! Interesting find!! GatorBoy may be right thinking outside the box!! Possibly a Paleorocktus Animal!! He He!! GOOD LUCK and GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

[Peyton Manning]

it was their safe for valuables, of course the points were sharper back then

[NCPeaches]

That's interesting...now am gonna research it because you made me wonder why too!

[GatorBoy]

I don't know the fossils in your area but I was serious.
I'm pretty sure I see latticework of bone type material that does not look like pottery.
It looks like it may be what's called a scute from some type of creature that had plating with spikes on it.
Like maybe an ancient version of an armadillo

[NCPeaches]

Might be a dinosaur egg shell fragment...check this link out! Dinosaur Eggshell Fragments | New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science

[curious kat]

...Hi everyone! Thanks monsterrack, it is odd looking for sure! And thanxs for the comic relief Tn & Jeff, funny guys! Hummm, a fossil? I can see where you guys (Gator Boy & VERDE) could think that, and I wish it were, but it does seems to be made of clay ....so think it is/was some kind of jar? Thanks Peaches for doing that research, very interesting! I'll do some to and see it I find anything, as I would like to know exactly what it was....you guys are great, thanks again!

[outlawatheart]

maybe a horny toad effigy...do you have them in your area?

[painterx7]

Whatever it is it very interesting

[GatorBoy]

Looks like natural sedimentary material it doesn't look like pottery.
Do you have a piece of pottery that looks to be made of the same material?

[old digger]

After enlarging your photo I tend to believe it is pottery, and I am in the same consensus as monsterrack and outlawatheart. It looks like what could have been a piece of animal of fetish pottery. JMO!

[Jon Stewart]

It's petrified alligator.

OK it's cold, we have more snow now then we got in 78 and I am bored.!!!!

[rginn]

So it doesn't slip or slide when you set it down.

[bci101tractors]

Looks like roof fall from a shelter to me?

[curious kat]

...lol on all the funny ones, love humor! Yes outlaw we do have "horny toads" here, very cute little critters! I do think it's pottery & like old digger said maybe animal. I took some up close for you GatorBoy .....here they are, will post some on the other one to......

[GatorBoy]

Thank you you didn't have to do that for me.. lol.. I'm going to quit throwing out guesses and just leave it at it still doesn't look like pottery to me. It looks like hardened clay like material yes... Just don't see any tool marks for making those bumps or any signs of smoothing the interior or any indication of it being fired by different color layers in the exterior versus the interior of the pottery.
Can I ask you for some details of the area you picked it up? that might help alot. Have you found a single piece of pottery in that same spot that looks to be made from the same material?
