Re: brass acorn

Just woke up! But, just in case, someone pinch me. (preferably a lady)

Great Job and more.

Re: brass acorn

I believe the bottom of the fob was attached to the bail section that is around the watch stem. The acorn was between the watch and the chain. Most watches were wore in a vest pocket or such. If the chain was either slipped out of the button hole or cut, and the chain was then pulled, the weight of the watch and a slight pull would cause the spikes to come out and snag on the pocket lining. There would be just enough warning to the owner that something was amiss and give him a chance for a head thumping. ;D

Re: brass acorn

Hi! Y'all! Found a 1998 nickel today, but that is not why I'm here. This acorn is a tuff nut to crack. I have been pondering this for a week now, and the only thing I can come up with is no one has determined its' size; so this is my guess.
When the Catholic Church invaded countries in the past, in order to get more converts and less dead heathens, it became necessary to accept into the faith a symbol from the indigenous religion. My suggestion is this is an incense burner, hence the swinging chain and holes, and the spikes were used to clear the holes to encourage the smoke to draw well.
So if this is feasible, then the Druids may have been involved.

Re: brass acorn

I would be very disappointed if this made the Best of what we have to offer....None of us found it nor own it nor know the owner. What started out as a fun post , took a serious wrong direction, spilling into other threads and basically making fools out of some of us for our bashing and petty spats. Finally some serious researchers came up with the answer and thats great, but for this type of thread to be placed in "Our Best?" really doesn't feel right to me.

My Thoughts Exactly, But you gotta Admit, Without the Hoopla,
this thread may have gone into Obscurity without an Answer.

I am Truly Impressed & Relieved :D

Re: brass acorn

Just in case anyone was wondering....

The dog training device that this resembles is a "soft mouth" trainer for bird dogs.  No need to find a pic now though.

Great job guys.

For verifaction of returning to the proper owner:

He or she should have 3 holes on their fingers.

Go find the owner PBK

Thanks, Tony... however, I'd say the nod goes to Stoney on this one. All I did was chase down the link that proved his hunch was right. Anyway, it just goes to show that Okies and Arkies can, "Get 'er done!"
