Re: brass acorn

Could be a hanger-hook for a plumb-bob. Pull the plunger, attache the hook to a beam or whatever, and the weight of the bob keeps the spikes out. When the weight is released the spikes go in, the acorn with string drops down to be easily and safely caught... or maybe not..I like the calligraphy tie in, that' good.

Re: brass acorn

Okay, I think i got it. A mason or carpenter would have this on the end of the string he uses to lay a straight line or height of a course of brick. Hook the spikes in a stake in the ground, pull the cord over to another stake some distance away, and tie it. Tension on the cord keeps the prongs out. Could also be used on the end of a measuring string. I know, let this die, sorry.!

After taking a look at this thing, one possibility comes to mind. Could it have been attached to a watch chainfor pickpocket prevention of a pocket watch. Pulling on the chain would activate the spikes, preventing the watch from being pulled out by snagging on the pocket. The owner though would reach in and grab the knurled edges thereby preventing the spike activation.
CASE SOLVED............MOVED ON !!!!!!!!

Now we need to locate the owner to tell him. ;D

And will this make the best of Treasurenet?

I would be very disappointed if this made the Best of what we have to offer....None of us found it nor own it nor know the owner. What started out as a fun post , took a serious wrong direction, spilling into other threads and basically making fools out of some of us for our bashing and petty spats. Finally some serious researchers came up with the answer and thats great, but for this type of thread to be placed in "Our Best?" really doesn't feel right to me.
I DONT AGREE,
ANY TOPIC THAT DRAWS THIS MUCH ATTENTION SHOULD BE IN THE BEST OF TNET AFTER ALL THATS WHAT TNETS ALL ABOUT

UPDATE MODIFICATION TO MY POST
LET ME SAY THAT THIS IS PART OF THE WONDERFUL THINGS OF TNET
TO AGREE OR DISAGREE WITHOUT FEELINGS BEING HURT
I LIKE GYPSYS THREADS,
IF YOU HAVENT READ ANY OF HER THREADS YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING.
