This book was giving to me some years ago and read very little.
The book is Portland in the Past by William Goold. Printed for the author by B.Thurston & co. Portland, Maine 1886.
I found this piece of paper inside the book and not sure what it is or if it was written by Capt Cobb or someone else.
Any help appreciated. This book can be read online.

That last line could read something like -

Delivered (on?) James Cobb - Charged to Capt. Samuel Cobb account

on "account" --as in delivered "unto" (handed over to) james cobb -- capt cobbs son * and charged to the capts account -- maybe the kid (james) was sent into town to pick up some goods for his father (looks like some nice cloth * was gotten -- most likely the capt might have been getting the wife a present maybe ?) and sent the boy to fetch it up from the merchant -- the boy or the capt might have been reading the book and used it as a book mark .

£1 (pound) 16 Shilling & 10 Pence is the first line. So its old British pre-decimal money :icon_thumright:
Thanks CRUSADER for that information.

" I did a little research and found that there was a Captain Jabez Cobb 1798-1805.
On the receipt above it looks like it says" Capt. I am. Cobb Jabet " instead of "Jabez".
roger"

The "I am" you refer to is really the abbrev. for Samuel. Sam, with the "l" elevated.
Capt. Samuel Cobb doesn't have to be a sea captain. Although the book was written in 1886, I think the receipt is decades (if not more) older. There are several revolutionary era Capt. Samuel Cobbs, but I didn't find one with son James with a quickie google.
I'd store it in acid free paper, flat. Or if you frame it, use acid free mats and hang out of direct sunlight.

Thanks Tigger. I was mistaken the s for an I. I was on a site the other day that showed signatures form the 1700's and Samuel Cobb was on the list but I was unable to view it. If someone finds it let me know so I can compair it to the signature on this receipts. Thanks for the info on the acid free paper.
