Dr. Jacob Houck was born in Frederick, Maryland, and moved to Baltimore in 1828. In 1834 he began selling Houck's Panacea; it is believed that the counterstamp emanated from the 1836-1837 Hard Times period. He was a prolific counterstamper, using whatever coin was available to promote his product.

From one Marylander to another, congrats on the find of a lifetime. Please let us know when the video is available to watch. It's finds like this that keep the rest of us going, for sure. One question, was there any broken glass around the find area? I would think a cache too, just not sure how it ended up in the river. Not sure how someone wouldn't notice a lump of change like that falling off their wagon/cart or what have you. Anyhow, your a lucky man and this is the stuff dreams are made of.
