Opium pipe?

Found in an old barn . It has a little pointy thing in the bowl . Seems to be made of pewter type metal . I'm not sure if it's from the 1970's or the 1870's the hole at the base of the bowl acts like a carburetor . Any ideas how old it might be ?

i agree with the others who said this isnt a pipe. i used to be an expert on the subject and i have never seen a hashish or opium pipe like that .

Actually I said they have a lid, but even that's not a hard and fast rule. This is a stereotypical opium pipe:

The flying saucer-shaped bowl detaches from the pipe and is filled with opium. The pipe is reassembled, and turned upside down so that the flying saucer-shaped bowl is on the bottom. The bowl is held over a candle or other flame source. As the opium heats up the psychoactive compounds are released as they turn into a gas, which is inhaled by the user. It's the same process that occurs when tobbaco or anything else is smoked, or when anything is burned for that matter. The reason opium is smoked that way is because too much heat applied too quickly will destroy the psychoactive components of the opium before they are released into the smoke. To some extent this is true for all smokable substances. But all compounds have different temperatures where that destruction occurs. If you are a really cheapskate cigarette smoker the most efficient way to smoke tobbaco would be to put it in a glass pipe made from a flask and then heat the outside of the flask to the precise temperature where the nicotine is released, and inhale the smoke at that time.

I don't know that the object in question is a pipe for smoking. But I would bet money that it isn't an opium pipe. Following the process I suggested earlier could eliminate the pipe theory, unless it's a pipe that has never been used. If Mojaxx lives in a large town or city another possibility would be to take it to the police station and see of anyone there thinks it's a pipe.

Similar process, different drug. Chasing the dragon involved heroin, which came into being in the final years of the 19th century. Opium smoking predated the development of heroin.

I agree, it looke like a part from a stove.

I think it's goes on an oil stove and that little deal that looks like a neddle jet, is just that. It would help if we could get a close up of the other end, that way I could see how the end is flared. Does it have a double flair of single flair?

Thanks alot everyone, this thread has just helped me i.d this tiny bronze tool i found a couple of weeks ago.its about 1 and half inches long and is either a YEN HAUCK a small scaping tool to dislodge the residue within an opium pipe or a YEN TSHI a needle on which to heat the opium.i thought it was a piece of the usual tinpan junk and fold in chinese gold mining area.                                    TINPAN  WILL POST TOMORROW

Here's a new thought: Could it be an old version of the tool used to check the air pressure in tires? The sliding rod with the tick marks is missing, and would have slid back and forth inside the stem.

Never heard that it was a legal foundation for probable cause, but I remember hearing that in the late 1980s the DEA sent out guidelines to law enforcement agencies that included Grateful Dead logos, roses, skeletons and the like as things to look for during traffic stops that might justify further investigation. I guess that means if you have a Grateful Dead sticker on your metal detector you're going to be rousted if the cops check you out while metal detecting. Who knows how many lists I'm on because of my "steal your face" avatar!
