FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Officials have released the identities of a mother and her young son who were tragically killed by a semi while stopping to help others who were involved in a crash late Monday night.
Those killed were 34-year-old Kristi Clark and her 10-year-old son, Carter Oakley.
Officials with the Franklin Police Department said officers were called to the crash just before 9:20 p.m. at mile marker 64 near the Murfreesboro Road exit on Interstate 65 South in Franklin.
Investigators said an SUV had rolled over after hitting a patch of black ice. A mother and her young son who saw what had happened stopped to help.
Police said they were both outside of the vehicle when they were struck by the semi. Carter died at the scene. His mother, Kristi, later died at Williamson Medical Center.
Five people were in the SUV that rolled over after hitting a patch of ice. Two passengers from that SUV were critically injured, while the other three were not hurt. They remained in serious condition Tuesday afternoon.
“Kristi and her son, Carter, are heroes,” said Franklin Police Chief Deborah Faulkner. “These Good Samaritans put themselves in harm’s way to help a stranger. The goodness in their hearts that prompted them to do that will never be forgotten.”
The interstate was closed until 6:45 a.m. Tuesday as crews worked to process the scene. Police officers remained on the scene to direct traffic around the icy spot.
Monday night, a State of Emergency was declared in Tennessee. All residents have been urged to stay off the roadways.
