Vibes is correct, the Mayans did not predict that the world would end in 2012, it is just the end of the last known "cycle" of their calendar. Their calendar was a remarkable achievement, extremely accurate. It had "cycles" that followed the movements of stars. At the end of a cycle, a new one would begin.

Only recently have FOR PROFIT "documentaries" begun interpreting the Mayan calendar as a prediction of doom.

Consider this, the Mayans couldn't even predict the demise of their own advanced culture. By the time Europeans arrived, they were living in only a shadow of their former "glory". The Mayans could read the stars, but they never invented the wheel. The Mayans built massive, wonderful structures, but never invented the cap stone...no archways, narrow corridors.

The Mayans had a five class structure, if you were on the bottom of it you could expect severe back problems in your teens and you could expect to be dead in your early thirties. They used up their soil, couldn't grow crops.

IMO, the Mayans are a remarkable people not because they predicted the end of anything, but because when the end came....they actually flourished and improved their daily lives. There ought to be a stone temple somewhere for the Mayan who first said, "We don't need no stone temple."

If you are planning that far ahead then why ask the question,"What will it bring?" That will just bring more questions like, "What happened?" after it does not turn out the way you expected.

Plan ahead for yourself and deal with it. It will surprize you with a different out come.

I don't know about 2012,but 2011 is suppose to bring lots of solar flares,or so says NASA,their saying that T.V. and cell phones may not work and that their going to have to move the space station?,where do you move it too.

I think that the space station will have to be moved into the "shadow" of the magnetosphere, so that it is protected as best it can be. However; the magnet shield is weakening, something that occurs naturally, in cycles, in advance of a magnetic pole shift. No worries, tho, as it has happened many times in the past millions/billions of yrs. Unless you're a Young Earth believer, then it happens every 9 yrs or so. The Mayan cycle ending in 2012 is like the last page of your calendar. Put up a new one, start over. I recall a tv show that stated that one of the Mayan predictions of future events was in a decade after 2012. So, apparently they didn't believe anything serious was imminent. Solar activity is more of a concern to me than a calendar. Solar flares could fry communication and navigation satellites, burn out the elec. grid in large areas of any continent exposed. Higher solar activity, historically, means higher temperatures. Higher temps lead to longer growing seasons, higher crop yields, lower grain prices because of abundance. Got to watch out for less rainfall, tho. Melting glaciers could lead to higher erosion downstream.
