They were making some heavy duty shell adze tools at this site. unfortunately I find mostly broken ones... which is normal but can get to be a downer. I found one whole piece that looks more like it would have done the work of a chisel. also got another fishing net weight.

I think that is a pipe bowl. I saw a pic of petrified palm and it looked a lot like that design! Probably not trade, think?

I've not seen anything like it as far as European pipes in my state. It is clay. I will research and see if I can find anything.

I does look like that... I thought something like that myself..alligator even. Its odd that's for sure.

I would think a shell Celt would break very easy when it was used. I bet they had to make them often. I would probably not even think of them as being artifacts if I hadnt seen you post these type. Thanks for showing something different from the normal.

Actually they test the same hardness as a lower grade chert. These are made from queen conch shell. Some are over a half 3/4 of an inch thick and heavy.

I wouldnt of even thought they were as tough as that. I am no shell expert. When I went to the beach it was either for swimming or fishing and girl watching.

I'm with you on that. These are all actually coming from a site inland from the coast. The shell (queen conch) dosent occur naturally as far north as I am in the state. It had to be brought in from the south so I can focus on the material and find alot that way. Otherwise there is alot of confusing shapes to look at.

I was looking at a site about Artifact Id and the net weights you have with holes might actually be boiling stones for cooking and not net weights after all. That is if you find pottery in the same place. Check it out and see for your state.

I appreciate that. Although I know about the cooking stones and they are a bit different. If you do a T-net search you should see one that BirdpointGriswald found a few months back. The site I find the sandstone net weights is actually pre pottery.

As always great finds man!! Great way to find a good site looking for that non native material!! Gonna try and get out this weekend!!

Good luck to you! And thanks

Thought I would post a couple baked clay cooking balls from Florida to show how similar in shape they are to net weights from my area. Rock is right about how much alike they look. Even grooved in some cases. The cooking balls near me were almost always made of hand molded clay whereas the net weights "in this area" were shell or sandstone. These are from Jim Maus artifacts. Website. The other is a couple of my net weights.

The color is misleading a bit. The brown is patina The material is noticeably different when you hold it in your hand.

a couple typical shell net weights. This is only my theory... but I believe the heavier stone weights were spread out across the bottom of the net with the lighter Shell weights in between.
