I did that with the first couple of them, but they're nearly impossible to net 16 feet up. I have 4 roll up shop doors and the tracks are where the hummers like to hang out once they're in there.
It certainly sucks to be the smallest in the food chain.
Hummingbirds fear and are prey to small predatory birds like Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels, Merlins, and Loggerhead Shrikes, as well as larger, territorial birds such as Blue Jays and Crows, which can attack and kill them, or their young. Additionally, some large spiders and aggressive insects like robber flies can also pose a threat by ambushing hummingbirds.
Small Predatory Birds
Sharp-shinned Hawks: and Cooper's Hawks: These small hawks are built for speed and agility and frequently target hummingbirds.
American Kestrels: and Merlins: These falcons are also efficient predators that can catch hummingbirds on the wing.
Loggerhead Shrikes: These birds are known to hunt and kill hummingbirds.
Larger, Aggressive Songbirds
Blue Jays and Crows: While not predators in the same way as hawks, these larger songbirds are territorial and can kill hummingbirds or raid their nests for eggs and chicks.
Woodpeckers: Some hummingbirds are known to be scared away by aggressive woodpeckers.
Insects and Spiders
Spiders: Larger spider webs can trap and kill small hummingbirds.
Robber Flies and Dragonflies: These predatory insects can ambush hummingbirds and kill them in flight.
