Fair question, but I can only answer for my own book.
In my case there is the solution and separately the evidence as an addendum and additional data provided free on the website. The coordinates, the star catalogue, all twenty-four alignments with their deviations, the full 55-pairing distance table including the misses, and the code to regenerate all of it is up there. It currently requires an e-mail sign-up intended for post publication updates but I'll have it taken off over the weekend if that's objectionable.
What costs £16.99 is 93,000 words of narrative. That's a book rather than a dataset, it took a year to write and what a reader is paying for is the research, writing, production, printing and distribution.
On the price: £16.99 on a 304-page paperback leaves me about £4 after Amazon's cut and the printing. It isn't a business model and I'll be very lucky to cover my costs.
I wrote the book not to make money, because I very likely won't, but because I want the site protected, once I understood what I believe to be in the ground there.
So judge the argument on the free part. If the alignments don't hold, nothing in the paid part matters — and you'll have found that out
